Open My Eyes

I used to have a poster on the wall of my office that had the words of Psalm 119:18 on it. These words are "Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things out of your law." I made that poster. I read that passage and thought it would be a good one to have on a poster in order to remind me when I am studying that the Bible is the treasure house of God revealed to man. I need to be reminded that this is the greatest treasure to be sought and that I should spend much time digging into it for the salvation of myself and those that hear me (1 Tim. 4:16). There may be times when something else has distracted me. Sometimes I might be a little tired. But time spent in the treasure house of God will cause me to focus upon the good things He has prepared for me and refresh me.

When I glanced at the poster I am also reminded of what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matt. 6:21). Is my heart set on the Scriptures? Is that where I have devoted myself? If so, I will be spending my time reaping the benefits of this treasure. I will be reading it, meditating upon it, applying it to my life. I will be praying to God for more opportunities to spend time with the word of God. I will want to share the treasures I have discovered with others.

I believe that the more time we spend in the treasure house of God, the more treasures we will discover. There is no such thing as a waste of time when it is spent with God’s word. I have always been impressed with those who have studied the Bible for many years who still show excitement when some truth is first discovered. May it always be so!

E. M. Zerr says, "The thought for general consideration is that if people would earnestly search the Sacred Volume they would be surprised at the wondrous things found therein" (BIBLE COMMENTARY, Vol. 3, p. 118). An unused Bible in the home of a Christian reveals nothing and is a shame to its owner.
