They No Longer Needed God

One day a group of scientists decided that man no longer needed God. They picked one of their own to tell God that man no longer needed Him.

The scientist walked up to God and said, "God, we've decided that we no longer need you. We're to the point that we can clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don't you get lost."

God listened patiently. After the scientist finished talking, God said, "Very well, how about we have a man-making contest." To which the scientist replied, "OK, great!" God then added, "We are going to do this like I did back in the beginning with Adam." The scientist said, "No problem" as he bent down to grab a handful of dirt.

God looked at him and said, "No, no, no! You must make your own dirt!"

I confess to times when I spoke belligerently to my mom, as a child. When they happened, she would reply by saying, "You are getting too big for your britches, young man!" Her warning was a reminder that I was not nearly as smart or powerful as I might think. In addition, she was letting me know that she could fit me to my britches with the switch she kept standing in the corner.

We all did it. We came to a time in our lives when our parents were dumb, old fashioned, and just plain outdated. This mentality surfaced when we reached thirteen going on thirty-five. We knew everything, had all the answers, and knew better than our parents how to live our lives. Thankfully, we grew up. Now that my dad is passed away and mom lives four hundred miles away, I need them more than ever.

Many today are getting too big for their spiritual britches. They forsake God. They think they no longer need God. They fail to understand that to say there is no God is to become a fool ("The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God" Psalms 14:1a).

The fool who says there is no God succumbs to all manner of sin. "They are corrupt, they have done abominable works; there is none that doeth good" (Psalms 14:1b). The fool's works are an abomination to God. "For this cause God gave them up unto vile passions: for their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working unseemliness, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was due. And even as they refused to have God in (their) knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;" (Romans 1:26-28).

Those who try to live without God are described by Paul when he speaks to Christians concerning their past lives ("that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world" Ephesians 2:12). A life without God is not a life worth living. It is indeed the life of a fool.

We need God as individuals and as a society. We can produce babies in unconventional ways i.e. petri dish fertilization of female ovum, cloning, etc. Scientists study the building blocks of life and at times, somewhat manipulate them. However, we cannot produce those building blocks out of thin air. The next time you are tempted to believe that man is his own god because he can manipulate genetics, ask yourself, can he produce dirt from nothing?
