Question: Who was Habakkuk? What is the meaning of his book??What does this message mean to us today?

Answer: Tradition holds that Habakkuk was a professional prophet and also that he may have been a Levite. Possible ties to the priesthood. He was a contemporary of Daniel and Jeremiah and much of his message is echoed by Jeremiah. His message was no different than any of the other prophets. The focus was to get people to turn from serving the Baals and false gods and to once again serve the Living God.

Habakkuk begins by describing conditions very similar to any society devoid of God. Then follows it by telling that swift judgement is at hand, and by ways which would be hard to believe by the faithful. Habakkuk ends by the describing of Habakkuk stating his trust in almighty God, and his hope for the future of his people.

One phrase in Habakkuk is quoted in the New Testament. Hab 2:4 "...the righteous will live by faith".

What is the message for us today? Read Romans 15:4 and 1 Cor 10:1-11 esp.11. We need to learn the lessons of God providing blessings for our obedience. And we need to see the results of disobedience.

Keep studying God's word. (Carey Scott, 6-24-2000 askme.com)
