CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD
Rom. 10: 13

INTRODUCTION
1. Three things are stated in the text:

(1) "WHOSOEVER"
1. This includes all men.
2. Now there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek (or Gentile) -- Rom. 10:12; Rom.
1:16; Rom. 2:11
3. The great commission is to all men --- Matt. 28: 19- 20; Mk. 16:15 - 16
4. The "middle wall of partition" is broken down -- Eph. 2: 14- 16
5. There is neither Jew nor Greek -- all one in Christ -- Gal. 3:28
6. The invitation is to ALL -- Matt. 11: 28 - 30; Rev. 22:17

(2) "SHALL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD"-- we will discuss this in the body of the sermon.

(3) "SHALL BE SAVED"
1. This is positive and certain.
2. This is spiritual salvation from sin.

I. WHAT "CALLING ON THE NAME OF THE LORD" INVOLVES:
1. The sinner must recognize he is LOST and his NEED for God.
2. He must realize that only God can save him through His Son Jesus Christ -- John 3: 16; Rom. 5:8;
Rom. 8:32; Luke 19:10
3. He must DESIRE to be saved -- Matt. 5:6
4. He must be willing to be OBEDIENT to Christ -- Heb. 5:9
5. He must recognize that salvation is by the GRACE of God and the BLOOD of Christ -- Eph. 2:8;
Matt. 26:28
(1) Not by "grace only".
(2) Grace through Faith -- Eph. 2:8
(3) God's Grace and Man's Faith.

II. HOW DO WE "CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD"?

1. FIRST -- negatively:
(1) NOT BY PRAYER
1. There is no example of an apostle or inspired man telling a man to pray to be saved.
2. The gospel is God's power to save man-- Rom. 1:16; Mk. 16:15 - 16; Rom. 8: 2; Acts 2:38
(2) NOT THROUGH THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1. It was never for the purpose of saving sinners.
2. The baptism of the Holy Spirit was a promise to a FEW for definite purposes -- Matt. 3:11;
Mk. 1:8; Acts 1:5
(1) The Apostles on Pentecost -- Acts 2: 1- 4, 14 - 18, 33
1. The PURPOSE was not to save them, but to show that Christ approved them to be
HIS Spokesman -- Acts 2: 14 - 21; 2:33
(2) The house of Cornelius -- Acts 10: 44 - 45
1. It was not to save them -- Acts 11:14
2. It was to show the Jews that there was no difference in Jews and Gentiles, and that
Gentiles were accepted into the Kingdom.
(3) NOT BY FAITH ONLY -- James 2:24; Gal. 5:6

2. SECOND -- positively:
(1) We have three passages that show how we are to "call upon the name of the Lord": Acts 2:21;
Acts 22:16; Rom. 10:13 (look at the context of these passages).
(2) PETER ON PENTECOST quotes Joel 2: 28 - 32 to show it was being fulfilled -- Acts 2: 16 - 21
1. The blessings and effects God would pour from His Spirit:
(1) Prophetic Revelation -- Acts 2: 17 - 18
(2) Miraculous Demonstration -- Acts 2: 19 - 20
(3) Spiritual Salvation -- Acts 2:21
2. We find out in detail HOW this spiritual Salvation was obtained in Acts 2:
(1) They heard and believed -- Acts 2:37
(2) They repented and were baptized -- Acts 2:38
(3) They received the gift of the Holy Spirit -- Acts 2: 38 - 39
(4) The gift of the Holy Spirit is SALVATION that is contained in the Promise -- Acts 2:39
(3) The second case is that of SAUL -- Acts 9:22
1. He came near to Damascus about noon -- suddenly there shined round about him a great light
from heaven -- Acts 9:3; Acts 22:6
2. He saw and heard Jesus -- Acts 22: 14 - 15; I Cor. 9:1
3. He asked the Lord "What wilt thou have me to do?" -- Acts 9:6
4. He was told to go into the city, "And it shall be told thee what thou must do..." -- Acts 9:6
5. Believing and having repented (Acts 9:9, 11), Saul was told to "be baptized and wash away thy
sins, calling on the name of the Lord" -- Acts 22:16
(4) The third passage is Romans 10: 12 - 17:
1. This passage plainly shows what is necessary to "calling on the name of the Lord":
(1) A preacher is needed -- Rom. 10:14
(2) Hearing -- Rom. 10: 14, 17
(3) Believing -- Rom. 10:14
(4) Obeying the gospel is necessary -- Rom. 10:16

CONCLUSION
1. God has given great and precious promises -- 2 Pet. 1:4
2. In obeying His will, we are calling on Him to keep His promises.
3. He will keep them -- 2 Pet. 3:9
