KINDS OF WORSHIP

The Bible has made it clear that there are various worship and their influence on human life. Let look at some of the various kinds of worship.

A. OLD TESTAMENT and NEW TESTAMENT WORSHIP

Under the Old Testament worship they were ask to practice these as worship;
a. Keeping the Sabbath – Exodus 20 :8 – 11
b. Keeping various feats and holy days – Exodus 23:14 -18, Lev 16:23
c. Worshiping at the temple in Jerusalem – 1 Kings 8: 25 – 53
d. Animals sacrifices and vegetable offerings – Lev 1:7
e. Tithing – Lev 27:30, Deut 26:12 -13
f. Instruments of Music, choirs, dancing – 1 Chron 25:1 -7, 2 Chron 29:25, Psa 150.
g. A separate priesthood – Exodus 28:1,Exodus 29:1

Under the New Testament these were what sayings about worship;
a. Worship is not tied to a building or place – (John 4:20 – 24)
b. All Christians are priest – 1 Peter 2:5,9, Rev 1:6
c. All Christians are servants of the new covenant – 2Cor3:6
d. The old testament was nullified on the cross – Col 2:15 – 17, Heb 7:12
e. Worship is to be done in spirit and truth – John 4:24

B. PRIVATE WORSHIP and PUBLIC WORSHIP

1. Private Worship

a. An individual paying homage to God.
b. Only one person involves.
c. It is not done in public places – Matthew 6:5-7, 1 Samuel 1:10 – 14 – Hannah, Matthew 26:39 – 40 – Jesus Christ, Genesis 22 – Abraham
d. There should be a distance between you and the rest of the people.

2. Co-operate or Public Worship

a. A group of people with one accord giving of paying homage to God.
b. There is nothing like “individualism” or private affairs.
c. One speaker for the group before God.
d. Everything is done publically but orderly.

C. ACCEPTABLE WORSHIP and UNACCEPTABLE WORSHIP

1. Acceptable Worship – Heb 12:28 – 29
a. It meets the will of God – Matthew 7:21 – 22
b. It is purposely for the glorification of God rather than man. – Matthew 15 :8-9.
c. It meets the approved way of worshiping God – Jeremiah 6:16 – 20
d. It is led by right people – 1 Tim 2:8, Matthew 15:14
e. Human will is totally abolished.
f. It is done well – Genesis 4:7
g. It is done with faith.

D. VAIN and IGNORANT WORSHIP

1. Vain Worship

a. It consider men first and God second –Matthew 7:7
b. They obey men more than they obey God – Matthew 15:8- 9
c. A worship which is empty, to no avail and useless.
d. Worship with such comment “My Church has always done it this way” this statement is no guarantee God is pleased.

2. Ignorant Worship

a. Worshiping with lack of knowledge on the following
I. Object – God
II. Acts – Praying, Lord Supper, Giving
III. Rewards and Punishment.
