The Necessity Of Obedience To God’s
Commands
God Commands
We better obey
Deuteronomy 31:12 “Assemble the people, the men and the women and children
and the alien who is in your town, in order that they may hear and learn and
fear the LORD your God, and be careful to observe all the words of this law”
Reading the Bible, Memorizing verses, Meditating on passages of scripture are
useless if we do not put into application what we learn.
Obedience to the word of God is the only way that anyone can be pleasing to
God.
Ezekiel 18:20
“ The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for
the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the
son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself,
and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.”
Psalm 119:1-8 “How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk
in the law of the LORD. How blessed are those who observe His testimonies, who
seek Him with all their heart. They also do no unrighteousness; they walk in
His ways. Thou hast ordained Thy precepts, that we should keep them diligently.
Oh that my ways may be established to keep thy statutes! Then I shall not be
ashamed when I look upon all Thy commandments. I shall give thanks to Thee with
uprightness of heart, when I learn Thy righteous judgments. I shall keep Thy
statutes; do not forsake me utterly!”
Obedience occurs before the blessing is received
2 Kings 5:
To have his leprosy removed Naaman went to the king first, then to the prophet
of God
The command was simple: Go dip seven times in the Jordan river
Resistance, anger were tempered by a soft counsel of his servant.
Was cleansed after he obeyed the command.
Blessings offered are conditional.
Jeremiah 42
People asked Jeremiah for instruction from the Lord.
Spoke the right attitude about receiving God’s word.
Jeremiah told them what God said,
But they said Jeremiah was lying.
They lost their lives because of dis-obedience.
What Obedience Brings
Exodus 19:5 “ Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,
then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth
is Mine;”
Proverbs 1:33 “But he who listens to Me shall live securely, and shall
be at ease from the dread of evil”
Blessings are Conditional
John 8:51 “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he shall
never taste of death”
John 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments”.
Luke 6:46 “And why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord’, and do not
do what I say?”
The results of obedience
Isaiah 1:18-20 “Come now, and let us reason together, says the LORD, Though
your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red
like crimson, they will be like wool. If you consent and obey, you will eat
the best of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the
sword. Truly the mouth of the LORD has spoken”
Obedience declares our love
of Jesus and God
John 14:23-24 “Jesus answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves
Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him,
and make Our abode with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My words;
and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me.”
Obedience reveals Our Heart
1 John 2:3-5,17 “And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if
we keep His commandments. The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him’,
and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected.
By this we know that we are in Him;….And the world is passing away, and
also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever.”
Obedience is necessary
1 John 5:2-3 “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we
love God and observe His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we
keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.”
Matthew 7:21 “Not every who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’ shall
enter the kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in
Heaven.
Commands obeyed results in blessings
Hebrews 5:8-9 “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things
which He suffered. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who
obey Him the source of eternal salvation,”
Conclusion
No blessings until after obedience.
Obedience will result in salvation.
Disobedience will not.
So, we must learn God’s Commands and obey them if we want to go to heaven.
