THE POINT OF OBEDIENCE OR DISOBEDIENCE

INTRO:

1. The subject of obedience is a major theme in the Bible.

2. Samuel told King Saul, that to obey was better than to sacrifice. 1 Sam. 15:22.

3. Peter and the apostles said that they must obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29.

4. Paul said that Christ was the author of eternal salvation to all that obey Him. Heb. 5:9.

5. He also said that Christ Himself obeyed the Father. Heb. 5:8.

6. Obedience to God in all things, always brings rewards and blessings to the obedient. Rom. 6:15-18.

7. But disobedience in any point of God's law to man, brings punishment and possibly eternal death. 2 Thes. 1:7-9; Jas. 2:8-13.

8. Time and time again, I have stressed in sermon, class, and bulletin the necessity of being faithful and stedfast in all the services of the church.

9. But still, in spite of all the exhorting and encouraging that is done by me and others, there are some in this congregation that are very, very indifferent about the attendance and work associated with this congregation.

10. The Bible tells us to be ready unto every good work, Titus 3:1, and to be stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in every good work, 1 Cor. 15:;58.

11. Some seem to be willing to attend at the 11:00 hour, but do not seem to have the time or inclination to attend the other services of the church.

12. Since this is true, let me hasten to ask: "At what point does their disobedience start, and their obedience kick in?"

13. Is it like the man building the house, the barn, and digging the well, etc.?

A. He was told by his father the exact place to build the house, the barn, and where to dig the well.

B. But he decided to put the well in a different place than was commanded by his father because HE thought it to be better.

C. In doing so, he lost his inheritance left by his father, because it was to be dependent upon the exact actions required by the father.

14. So, to those who think they can change one law of God and thereby still gain the promised reward, they are badly mistaken.

I. EXAMPLES OF OBEDIENCE OR DISOBEDIENCE:

A. Hearing, Rom. 10:17. Believing, Heb. 11:6. Repenting, Acts 17:30. Confessing, Matt. 10:33. Being Baptized, Gal. 3:27.

1. Can any of the above be left out and one still be able to be in Christ?

B. Which of the requirements of worship can be left out and one still be able to be pleasing to God? Acts 2:42.

C. Which of the elements of church organization can be left out and still be pleasing to God?

D. What about the work of the church, which required element can be left out and still one can be pleasing to God?

CONCLUSION:

So, at what point are we pleasing to God?

At the point of complete obedience to His Word. Taking nothing away and adding nothing to.
